MOLESKINE:

What does a veteran look like? Some are easy to spot: short hair, wear military clothing, or have a Spyderco. Others may have tattoos, wear a specific brand of sunglasses or use military jargon. Still, not all veterans are easily-identified simply by appearance.

Sitting in a mom & pop restaurant my M and I noticed an older man.  He had no military hat on or any other obvious sign that he was a Veteran. However, I figured he was.  My guess, Korean war vet.  He had kind eyes.  Knowing eyes.  “Old” eyes that had seen too much, or things no person wants to see.  I tried to picture him as a young man in his 20s, snappy uniform, serving our country. He nodded and smiled at me as we left.

There is something about those who have worn the uniform.

How can this be? What it is about people who have served?  Is it the way they carry themselves? Their haircut? The look in their eyes? I can’t quite put my finger on it.

And if you ask a veteran, “how did you do it?” They’ll likely say, “I was just doing a job…..just like you.”  We are not better than anyone, we do not need any more praise than the man or woman who puts in a hard days work for an honest days pay.  We are flawed people who want to be in relationship with others.

So what does a veteran look like?  He or she looks just like you….. perfect in God’s eyes.  Happy Veterans Day.

Aye!
