MOLESKINE:  The Sound of silence…

I have to be honest with you, I was initially stumped about perceiving and perception.

Perceived – a sensation that must pass through the body through one of sensory organ, like the eye, ear, nose, mouth, or skin.

Perception – interpretation of that sensation.

Auditory perception, the ability to perceive and understand the difference between sounds, has been thought of as the perception of sounds.  Maybe it is a friend’s voice, a clap of thunder, or the sound of music.  There are times where we find ourselves in the presence of any sound.  A moment of silence.  Is it really silence or do we just fail to hear, and merely interpret that it is silent?

We, as humans, have a very finite range of hearing, ranging from 50 hertz (Hz) to 20 kilohertz (kHz).  Dogs are a bit more, 67Hz to 45kHz. Bats, 2Khz to110kHz. Elephants, 16-12kHz. Trees, 220Hz.

Why do I list these out?  To show you that while we may not hear things it does not mean we are in silence.  We may strive to find a silent place but the cacophony of the world is all around us, beneath or above our hearing.  We have a perception that we can escape the hustle and bustle of the office space to a silent place.  We believe we can get away from it all and be in silence.  And yet, we are wrong.

So how does this all pertain to leadership?

As we move up the corporate ladder, taking on greater responsibility, the number of  important decisions also grows.  Leaders often talk about the daily challenge to maintain mental focus amid such busy schedules.  Without focus how can you possibly help your teams?

Most people actually form perceptions through observation then run them through the filters of their own experiences, emotions, and philosophical positions.  The output of these filters leads us to making  good or bad decisions.  Take the time necessary to turn on your (objective) observer and develop an unbiased filter to create more accurate perceptions.

The leadership focused question for this post is, how are you perceiving others and how will you reframe to correct those perceptions?

Hmmm….

Maybe the question should be, how are you perceived by others and how will you change to correct those perceptions?

Aye!
