MOLESKINE:  Two pages

On August 6, 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the “Endurance” set out on a historic voyage to make the first land crossing of Antarctica.  If you don’t know the story look into it.  A true story of Leadership!!

However, my Moleskine isn’t about Leadership.  It’s about relationships and being humble.

A diary entry of October 27, 1915 reads: “She was doomed, no ship built by human hands could have withstood the strain.”

The crew took only what was needed for survival. Shackleton tore out two pages from a Bible presented to him by Queen Alexandria. Her inscription from Psalm 107:24 read: “May the Lord guide you through all dangers by land and sea. May you see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.”

Stop – re-read that.  Take only what was necessary for survival…and he took two pages from the Bible.

The other from the book of Job.  Job 38.  Why Job 38?  I dunno, but I have a guess.  Job 38 starts out with God putting questions to Job, showing him his ignorance.  Where were you when….?  How does….? Where is….?  God ensures that Job knows there is so very little he can do, so he should rely on (not question) God.   At the end of the chapter God shows that he will tend even the young ravens.  Certainly he wouldn’t do less for His peeps.  (pun intended)

Take a minute to think how much good God does, every day, beyond what we are aware of.  YHC has been on the other side, shaking my fist at God, asking “why”.  I had to humble myself.  We may not be able to see how all things work out for good. I don’t think God makes things happen (e.g. a two month old dies, a bus of children crashes, etc.).  What I pray, is that he makes good things come out of the worst situations.  Only in heaven will we see all things clearly.  All the more reason as why everything we DO see of His infinite PERfections, should remind us to love Him.  God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Shackleton; one hard mother-…., a role model for leadership extreme circumstances, a humble servant, after 20 months led all of his men to safety.

The Bible—its words enduring over the centuries!   If you were stranded on the South Pole and had to take only what was needed for survival what two pages of the Bible would you take?   Would you think to take the bible at all?

Aye!
