MOLESKINE:  Time

“I don’t have time…”

“I didn’t make time…”

You don’t have or make time. Time just is.  Does anyone really know what time it is?

Here’s a little story from YHC’s past at the White House:

I was receiving a briefing from someone who was pitching an idea, one I didn’t think it was very good.  He had all the right materials, all the right focus it was just bad timing.  Our mission statement didn’t mash up to the approach that the fella was suggesting. His idea might help us save a few minutes here and there setting up communications but I didn’t think it was worth the time.

And so, not wanting to be disrespectful, I took the easy way out as I said, “You know, that sounds like solid plan, but we’ve got our heads down trying to get through a campaign and just don’t have time to pursue that at the moment.”

“Really?”, he about spit out at me.  He continued, “I don’t believe you. You’ve found the time to craft a plan to put together dozens of teams that deploy to set up communications for the President, do hundreds of hours of scenario driven iterations and work out daily, and you don’t have time for an 8-hour project?”

Gotta hand it to him, he had balls AND he was right.

I admitted as such, and although I still wasn’t fully on board with the idea he suggested, the encounter changed the way I look at time management.

I used to hear “I don’t have time for that” a lot.

And more often than not, it was simply an excuse for “that sounds too hard” (and I don’t want to admit it).

It’s a habit we can fall into.  When something sounds difficult or unpleasant, it’s so easy to say “I don’t have time for that”, because it makes us feel a lot better than saying “that’s sounds hard and I don’t want to put in the effort.” or “It’s cold outside and I’m tired.”

Not having enough time sounds legitimate and maybe makes you think you’re important.  Come on.  Be honest. 99% of the time, it’s simply not true.

Replace “I don’t have enough time” with

“that’s just not important enough to me to do right now.”

Simple and incredibly powerful.

For things that actually aren’t important, you’ll become more honest about why you’re not doing them.  You’ll stop trying to BS everyone…including yourself.

We all have the same 24 hours available to us each day.  We have the same 24 hours available to us as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Guy Feiri, or our own Schlitz.   None of these people have managed to create a day that contains more than 24 hours.  And yet, their level of accomplishment borders on the unfathomable.

If you look only at their success, it can be discouraging.  Just realize they have exactly the same amount of life’s most precious resource—time—as you do.

Gary Vaynerchuk.  He is a Belarusian-American entrepreneur, author, speaker, and Internet personality.  I didn’t know this guy or even heard his name before I started researching for this Backblast.  He is a co-founder of the restaurant reservation software company Resy.  His take on time:

“Everybody has time. Stop binge watching fucking Lost.”

Boom.  There it is.  #Truth

How are you spending your time?  Your important-never- get-it-back time?  Binge watching CODAor some other show that you’ll forget in a month?   Maybe you’re spending hours watching the Sweet 16 that will be eclipsed by next year’s Sweet 16.

Please, don’t say you can’t:

  • Post in the morning
  • Eat dinner with your family
  • Take a hike with the kids
  • Hold your wife’s hand on a stroll because…

“I don’t have time…”

“I didn’t make time…”

Save the excuses.  Set your priorities.

Aye!
