Good work men!

Have you ever said something to then regret your words later?  I’m guilty.  😉  Not that it’s the first time, not by a long shot, but since my last Moleskine I was reminded why church.  I had given a lot of examples in that Moleskine that might have led one to think you don’t need church and you can do everything “churchy” without the corporate church.

Last Sunday’s sermon was a reminder to me that while we do so much outside the walls of the church building there is much that is also done through the corporate church.

We, as religious folk, (Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.) are all experiencing the exodus of people choosing not to go the church.  The numbers are alarming.  I’ll pass along why church, for me:

 1. We bear one another’s burdens — Ok, so you can do this outside church building…’s NOT about the building, it’s about the people in the building!

2.  We learn. Our 2.0’s learn.  Our kids see what it is to belong to a community and how to work things out with each other in this beautiful mess of community.

3.  People speak Big T – Truth to us.  Truths we may not want to hear but need to hear.  When you live in a real community, in real relationship with others you will get bumped.

4.  We give one another communion. The etymology of the word begins in the 12th century Latin; communionem”fellowship, mutual participation, a sharing,”  In the 14th century it changed a bit to, communioun, “participation in something; that which is common to all; union in religious worship, doctrine, or discipline,” from Old French comunion “community, communion”.  So while many people think of communion is only the breaking of the bread and drinking of the wine, I think of it also as F2.

5.  Church happens when we share life together. The ‘we’ being all of us different people, with all our differences.   Church happens when we look out for each other, where we cheer the good news and weep at the sad.  Church is standing together during difficult times and reveling in each other’s success’. Yeah, I said that last time too….and that’s church!

Gotta have a Pot Luck pic

God’s Kingdom is bigger than us.  I say we all need church because God’s work on earth is through His church.

The church may have some issues and be a bit messy at times….do you think you’re not?  Come on back to [a] church.  I’ll save a seat for ya!!
