MOLESKINE:  Two weeks ago….

Moneyball lead the Q Source group that meets (virtually right now) at 0615 to discuss leadership principles. His topic – Targeting.

To Target is to give the greatest gift a man can provide, the freedom to move beyond himself into his High Impact Zone.

Moving beyond self to serve others puts me at my best.  Years ago, I was given a gift when a group of us at a transformative leadership class were told to offer specific words or phrases to each person in our group.  These words were not to be descriptors of our character traits, but to express how life showed up for you in the presence of that person.  This IS NOT something the person does or says.  This is what innately shows up when they walk into a room.

Think about that for a second.

When Captain D walks into a room what do you feel?  How about when Poacher walks in, or Flying Tomato, or pick a person.  Each person brings their own special gift into the world just BY BEING.  Another way of thinking about it is what quality do they present?

Back to the conference experience – some of the things people put in my basket.  What they felt in my presence:

  • Grounded    – Confident    – Clear    – Possibility   – Ease    – Curious    – Assertive                         – I feel heard    – Challenged (in a good way)

Initially my reaction was, “these people don’t know me very well.”  All that weekend, I collected these words and phrases from these people.  We were then told to ask our family (parents, siblings), wives, and friends and I did.  These people were feeding me by putting words in my basket.  Then I was able to take these notes and slips of paper and find the thread that wove through my life’s tapestry.

When the right phrasing comes to you, you’ll feel it “click”.  Again, it wasn’t what I DID (or you do)…it was who I was just by being.

The voices I recalled and scraps of paper I still have show a steady drumbeat of service to others.  My Promise In Being?  I, Brian Wells, promise that wherever I am, no matter what, life will show up as a noble I gotch’a.  No matter what life throws at you and rocks you I’ll be there to catch you, to support you to climb under the yoke with you and bear what is.

These words people put in my basket allowed me to glimpse my greatest gift – to move beyond myself.

Do you know who you are? How you show up in the world without doing anything?  Don’t wait to ask people in your life for we no not which comes first, the morning or our last breath.  So grant the speaking of others through your listening and also speak life into them.  Don’t wait for the wake to say, “When ‘Bob’ came into a room it just lit up.”  Let ‘Bob’ know!  This is good medicine for yourself and others.

Ask people to put words, these words and phrases of Amazing Grace, to paper and give them to you.  The sound of them is so sweet.  They may just save you (they did me).  I was a Sad Clown for many years, I was lost and through the grace of God and you men I have been found…I was blind to who I was and now have soulful eyes to see.

Read the words and phrases they put in your basket and find the thread that weaves through them all and then…..

You’ll be able to see the thread throughout the beautiful tapestry that God has envisioned for you – who he made you to be.

My life is but a weaving
Between my God and me. I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.

Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.

Not ’til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned

He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.
