MOLESKINE:  A long, long time ago….

A group of us were gathered, not knowing the weekend before a tragedy had occurred.  Blissfully ignorant we sat there listening to the leader speak wisdom to us.  Then about ½ way through his talk he asked all of us there, “who of you would save their brother on the battlefield, even running out to save their life at the cost of your own? “

Every one of us raised our hands and many vocalized their approval with a “heck yea” or “you know it.”

Next he asked us, “who would stop that same brother from getting in a car after having too much to drink?” He continued, “maybe you were there with your buddy celebrating a promotion or a successful return to the USA or anything really.”  Would you stop him knowing the consequences can either kill him, someone else, or result in a consequence that could cost him his career?

The next question, “Who here would stop that same brother from flirting with a woman when away from home?  Maybe it would stop there, maybe it wouldn’t…but you knew he has a wife and kids at home?”

The room sat quiet.

Many of us have been in or around situations that the instructor highlighted that day.  Some of us have made the stupid move to hop into the driver’s seat after having some brown water with our friends.  We can do incredible, remarkable and sometimes unthinkably-stupid things. What you do with your life, is your choice, it’s always your choice.  How you serve others is also a choice.  What I would ask is that you look in the mirror and be honest with who’s looking back at you…what have you done in those situations?  What would you do if they present themselves again?

We build relationships here in the Sandhills.  And when things get a bit dicey we are able to lean into these relationships, these Guardrails if you will.  You know guardrails aren’t so critical in the areas of his life where failure is unlikely. I’ve done my bricklaying to create and strengthen these guardrails in the areas of my life where the danger lurks [think Jester].  For me it has been tobacco use – dipping.  Ok I’ll throw the BS flag on myself!  It was parsing words, choosing what to say or not say to cover my habit of dipping.  I didn’t lie but I wasn’t being totally honest & transparent.  It ate me up.  Ask my Shield Lock…better yet just look at them – those Guardrails (those men) are scratched, battered, beaten because they do their job in keeping me out of the ditch.  We have friends to help us watch our blind-spots.  Whether that’s making sure we don’t get in the car after drinking or stopping us from picking up a can of chewing tobacco or infidelity…we need these men in our lives to be strong and speak the hard-T Truth should the situation present itself.

Time to stop looking the other direction!  Stand beside your brother and face life together.  Use the guardrails you’ve worked to build.  Be the guardrail your friend needs to keep him from wrecking his life and the life of others that love him.

Aye!
