Moleskine:

The following is a tale from antiquity.  Bare with me on this, I always commit to bring find you where you are and faithfully bring you somewhere….hopefully somewhere better than where you were.

A very long time ago mankind was given a warning. At a certain date all the water in the world which had not been specially stored up, would disappear. It would then be renewed, with different water, which would drive men mad.

Only one man listened to the meaning of this advice. He collected water and went to a secure place where he stored it.

On the appointed date the streams stopped running, the wells went dry, and the man who had listened, seeing this happening, went to his retreat and drank his preserved water.

When he saw the waterfalls again beginning to flow, this man descended among the other sons of men. He found that they were thinking and talking in an entirely different way from before; yet they had no memory of what had happened, nor of having been warned. When he tried to talk to them, he realized that they thought that he was mad, and they showed hostility or bitterness, not understanding.

At first, he drank none of the new water, but went back to draw on his water supply.  Finally, he made the decision to drink the new water because he could not bear the loneliness of living, behaving and thinking in a different way from everyone else. He drank the new water, and became mad like the rest. Then he forgot all about his own store of special water, and his fellows began to look upon him as a madman who had miraculously been restored to sanity.

As YHC looks out into the world, into our community, there’s a lot of “mad” people.  Don’t believe me?  Turn on the news for five minutes.  (Let me save you….just don’t).  How did this happen?  I’m not sure.  One thing I can tell ya is that we’ve lost our heart-dialect.  Rather than speak with kindness or compassion people are firing off emails, and/or posting hurtful things or speaking with hostility or bitterness.   Poacher posted something yesterday that works with this Moleskine…”Men – when you find someone doing something positive, let them know…publicly. Too much negativity across the digital spectrum.”

I look to you, my F3 mates, who have and continue to Get Right, Live Right and Lead Right.  It’s your strength of ongoing commitment to grow our character to not give up and drink the “Mad” water.  More than that, you don’t merely hoard the water and watch.  You have prepared body/mind/spirit to be strong enough to go out into our community and live among “the mad” without becoming mad yourself.

Have we been so isolated by COVID-19 that we are willing to come out into the world and drink the waters of hatred? Of venom, or side-choosing to just be in community again? Just to be a part of the crowd?  We have not.  I know I have to work harder than any beatdown to assure this.   Will you join me in this work?

Come on…drink the F3 (Fitness, Fellowship, and most importantly FAITH) water that we’ve worked for and must continuously work for.  We aren’t the Sad Clown in the above story…alone.  Loneliness is our subconscious yelling at us to go find a partner because we are not supposed to live like that. It’s dangerous.  We build guardrails to keep us straight.  We don’t have to drink the new water and become mad like everyone else.

We Lead Right as servants whose purpose it is to seek advantage for others.

We can’t do this from the safety of our water supply.   This can only be done from the context of a relationship. It takes Proximity.  It takes Contact.

Aye!
